The New Zealand Government has announced changes to the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa, set to take effect in August 2026. These updates aim to make it easier for employers to retain skilled workers and for migrants to secure residence in New Zealand.
Two New Residence Pathways
1) Skilled Work Experience Pathway
- For skilled roles (ANZSCO levels 1–3)
- At least 5 years’ relevant work, including 2 years in New Zealand at 1.1x the median wage.
2) Trades and Technician Pathway
- For specified trades and technical occupations.
- Requires a Level 4 or higher qualification and at least 4 years’ experience, including 18 months in New Zealand at/above the median wage.
These pathways recognise the value of practical skills and long-term contributions to New Zealand’s workforce.
Other Key Changes
- More points for NZ university qualifications – helping international graduates move into residence.
- Reduced NZ work experience requirements – most migrants will now need a maximum of 2 years, down from 3.
- Simplified wage settings – migrants only need to maintain the median wage during their work experience period, instead of meeting higher thresholds later.
Those changes are aimed to provide more certainty for employers in retaining skilled staff and reflect real skill needs in trades and technical roles and clearer, more achievable pathways for migrants.
Looking Ahead
These changes are part of the Government’s Going for Growth programme, which seeks to refine the Accredited Employer Work Visa, improve education outcomes, and support young people into employment or training. While the reforms are encouraging, the current English language requirement for SMC residence (IELTS 6.5) remains a significant barrier for many applicants, particularly those in the trades sector.
Although the new rules will not come into effect until August 2026, it is important for both employers and migrants to begin preparing now. This includes reviewing workforce needs, checking eligibility, and keeping up to date with further guidance as it is released. If you need assistance, please get in touch with us.
