From initial consultation to residence approval: why preparation matters?
Applying under New Zealand’s Active Investor Plus (AIP) Visa is more than meeting an investment threshold. It requires careful planning, thorough documentation, and a clear understanding of both immigration requirements and investment options.
One of our recent clients demonstrated exactly why transparency, collaboration, and professional guidance can make all the difference. While every investor’s circumstances are unique, this case highlights how working together from the very beginning helped achieve a successful outcome—from the initial consultation through to the grant of New Zealand residence.
The first conversation: understanding the client’s goals
Every successful application starts with understanding the investor’s objectives. During our initial consultation, we focused on three important questions:
- How much capital is the client planning to invest?
- What is their background and source of funds?
- What type of investment best aligns with the client’s goals?
We also explained the key immigration requirements, including that applicants must:
- be a fit and proper person
- invest at least NZD $5 million under the Growth category or NZD $10 million under the Balanced category
- transfer their investment funds to New Zealand
- demonstrate that their investment funds were earned or acquired lawfully
- meet all health and character requirements.
Having a clear roadmap from day one gave the client confidence in the process and allowed us to plan each stage efficiently.
Transparency made the difference
One of the biggest reasons this application progressed smoothly was the client’s willingness to work collaboratively throughout the process.
The client responded promptly to requests for information, maintained organised financial records, and was transparent about the source of their investment funds. This level of cooperation allowed us to:
- prepare accurate documentation
- verify the lawful source of funds
- anticipate potential questions before they arose
- minimise unnecessary delays.
Rather than reacting to issues as they appeared, we were able to proactively address them before they became obstacles.
Choosing the right investment pathway
An important part of our role was helping the client understand the two available investment categories, Growth and Balanced.
Growth Category
The Growth category requires a minimum investment of NZD $5 million. Acceptable investments include:
- direct investments
- managed funds
- philanthropy (up to 20% of the total investment).
Growth investments are generally higher risk and often involve longer-term commitments. Direct investments and managed funds must be assessed as acceptable by Invest New Zealand. While Invest New Zealand determines whether investments meet visa requirements, investors should still undertake their own due diligence before committing to any investment. This is because, as they are investing NZ$5 million or more, they are treated as “wholesale investors” who are expected to be experienced; those who offer investment products are exempt from the need to provide the consumer protections and disclosures which are provided to amateur investors.
Balanced Category
The Balanced category requires a minimum investment of NZD $10 million. Acceptable investments may include:
- direct investments
- managed funds
- philanthropy
- listed equities
- bonds
- property developments.
The additional types of investments, such as bonds and shares on the Stock Market, tend to be safer places for applicants to put their money.
From Approval in Principle to investment
Once INZ approved the application in principle, our client became eligible to apply for a work visa while arranging the transfer of investment funds into New Zealand. This stage often requires careful coordination between immigration experts, financial professionals, banks, and investment providers.
Because much of the groundwork had already been completed, the transition from approval in principle to investment was efficient and well managed.
A Successful Outcome
The result was the successful grant of residence under the Active Investor Plus Visa. While every application presents its own challenges, this case demonstrates several important lessons:
- Early planning saves time later.
- Transparent financial disclosure builds confidence throughout the application.
- Well-organised documentation reduces delays.
- Professional guidance helps investors navigate a complex process with greater certainty.
